The phrase “I can’t believe my eyes” literally holds good with regard to optical illusions. These visual delusions happen when we see something and perceive it to be something else. The complexity of what we see poses a challenge to our brains in deciphering it. There are examples of patterned optical illusions which appear to move when we stare at them, despite the conscious awareness of the fact that they are static. ‘Flashed Face Distortion Effect’ is an example of such a misjudgment where our perception is blurred by fast-changing images, because before our brains even process them, they change into something completely different. The shift is so swift that we tend to create a totally alternative and weird image from them. Two faces aligned at our eye level with a cross symbol placed in between them; both the images change simultaneously creating this mirage-like phenomenon.
This effect has been done with well-known Hollywood faces and at the ‘8th Annual Best Illusion of the Year Contest’ it earned the second position.
Give it a try… focus on the cross symbol in between and let your imagination go wild.
We know you saw something like this!
Felt like a roller-coaster ride, isn’t it?
